Before you request an estimate

Write down the origin, destination, preferred dates, access details, inventory, and services you actually need. Give the same information to each company so the estimates answer the same question.

Ask for the company’s legal name, role, contact information, and the identifier shown on the paperwork when one is provided. For an interstate household-goods move, ask how the company’s carrier or broker role fits into the arrangement.

• Who will arrange the move and who will transport the shipment?
• What information or inventory does the estimate rely on?
• Which services are included, and what could create an additional charge?

Before you choose a company

Ask whether the estimate is binding or non-binding, what valuation or liability options are offered, how pickup and delivery windows work, and how deposits or cancellations are handled. Request explanations for terms you do not understand.

Use the same written questions with every candidate. A lower number is not necessarily a like-for-like comparison if the inventory, services, estimate type, or responsibilities differ.

Before moving day

Keep your estimate, inventory, agreement, receipts, company contacts, and written answers in one place. Reconfirm the company name and the services shortly before pickup, and ask what to do if the details change.
