How to compare moving estimates fairly.

Make the inputs comparable

Give each company the same origin, destination, dates, inventory, access details, packing needs, storage needs, and special-item information. Save the version of the inventory and estimate you used so you can see what changed.

If one estimate includes packing, stairs, long carries, storage, or other services that another does not, record that difference before comparing totals.

• Same move route and date range
• Same inventory and requested services
• Same access conditions and special handling needs

Compare the terms, not just the total

Put the company’s legal name, role, estimate type, services, payment terms, timing windows, valuation or liability information, and possible additional charges in separate columns. Ask each company to explain a blank or unfamiliar term.

A binding estimate and a non-binding estimate should be labeled separately. A low number that leaves out a service is not necessarily a lower price for the same move.

Choose the next question, not a winner

Use the comparison to identify what needs clarification: a missing company role, an unexplained fee, different inventory assumptions, or a timing and responsibility question. Keep the answers with the estimate.
