Binding, non-binding, and not-to-exceed estimates are not the same.

Estimate labels describe different kinds of price commitments. Read the exact wording, included services, and conditions together instead of treating a familiar phrase as a guarantee.

Identify the estimate type

A binding estimate generally states a price for the services and shipment described in the estimate, subject to its terms and conditions. A non-binding estimate is an approximation, so the final charge can differ when the move details or applicable charges differ.

A company may use the phrase not-to-exceed in its own offer. Ask what that phrase means in this document, what services and inventory it covers, and which conditions can change the amount. Do not assume it has the same meaning as a binding estimate.

  • The exact estimate label and promised price
  • Inventory, weight or volume, and services included
  • Conditions for added work or changed move details

Get the important answer in writing

Ask the mover to explain how stairs, long carries, packing, storage, access changes, extra items, and date changes affect the price. Keep the estimate, inventory, and written answers together.
